Hope/Wings
New Works by Jane Park Wells
August 3 through September 30, 2018

Our current exhibition features vibrant new paintings by Korean American artist Jane Park Wells.

A trained artist with a BA in Studio Art from Scripps College and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University, Wells has explored both figural and abstract painting as well as collage, but for the last 20 years she has been known primarily for abstract compositions made up of seemingly meandering veins of color interconnecting rhythmically over a hidden grid pattern. At first glance the lines seem random but closer inspection reveals a carefully calculated structure and rhythm.

“The introverted thinker in me is drawn to analytical systems,” Wells explains, “like the parameters of the grid or the mathematical structure that produces rhythm and meter in music.” The union of her analytical side and her emotional, artistic side produces fluid, pulsing lines solidly grounded in mathematical patterning. Her new series Hope/Wings is a continuation of the theme of Hope inspired by origami cranes – a global symbol of peace and hope. The paintings are positive expressions of hope and wishes for a more compassionate world.

All of the works in this exhibition are for sale and a percentage of the proceeds will benefit the garden’s ongoing cultural programming.

About the En Gallery at the Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden

In Japanese, the word “en” written with one character (園) can mean garden. Written with a dif- ferent character (縁), “en” can signify the special, and often mysterious, bond that connects people. It also refers to the verandah – a space that exists between inside and outside. Located in the house looking out on the garden, the gallery will feature exhibitions of art relating to nature, spirituality, wellness and relationships. The exhibitions will spotlight work by artists from all around the world and in a range of diverse styles, and will be curated by Meher McArthur, an Asian art historian and Creative Director of the Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden.

Exhibitions may be viewed during the garden’s open hours or you may make an appointment with the curator by emailing info@japanesegardenpasadena.com.
