Join us on the last Sunday in January to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year. We have planned a festival for the whole family with music, poetry, art making, storytelling and snacks from Japan, China and Korea with a special pop-up store offering Citron's beautiful Asian inspired clothing and accessories.
FESTIVAL PROGRAM
ALL DAY (10am-4pm)
- Chinese Lantern-Making: Learn how to make different kinds of traditional Chinese paper lanterns with members of the garden’s Asian Arts Council.
- Japanese Origami-Making: Fold cranes, dogs and other forms to celebrate the New Year with members of the garden’s Asian Arts Council.
- "Brushstrokes and Blooms: The Calligraphy and Ikebana of Shizuko Greenblatt" Enjoy our new art exhibition in the garden’s En Gallery.
- Citron Clothing: Shop for Asian-inspired clothing and accessories.
- Family Fun Guides and Treasure Hunts: Pick up these educational guides to make exploring the garden even more fun.
SPECIAL EVENTS
- 11am and 1pm: Story Telling at the Waiting Bench: Beloved storyteller Sunny Stevenson will regale children and adults alike with tales from different parts of Asia.
- 12pm – 3pm: Korean Minhwa Folk Painting Workshops: Learn to create traditional paintings with trained instructors. (Sponsored by the Korean Cultural Center, LA, www.kccla.org)
- 12pm – 1pm: Tanka Poetry Reading: Visiting from Tokyo, poet Mariko Kitakubo will perform her tanka poetry, accompanied by Rick Wilson on shakuhachi. Tanka is Japan's oldest poetic form (31 syllables, arranged 5-7-5-7-7) and Ms. Kitakubo is one of its most renowned poets.
- 2pm – 2:45pm: Japanese Koto Musical Performance: Enjoy uplifting melodies performed by Kozue Matsumoto and the Calarts Japanese Music Ensemble.
