Origami – the Japanese art of paper folding – is no longer confined to Japan or to the classroom. Thanks in part to Japanese origami artist Akira Yoshizawa (1911-2005), who created new origami designs, new folding techniques and simplified origami instructions for non-Japanese learners, origami has become a worldwide pastime and a sophisticated global art form. Over recent decades, artists, scientists, mathematicians and designers around the world have innovated folding techniques and styles, experimenting with different paper types and inspiring each other to push the boundaries of origami.

Folded Garden features the origami art works by Robert J. Lang, Bernie Peyton, Beth Johnson, Joel Stern, Meenakshi Mukerji, Jared Needle, Ekaterina Lukasheva and Alec Sherwin. All of these artists masterfully recreate life-like living creatures and plants from folded paper or take nature as their inspiration for modular and tessellated works, expressing the wonders of the natural world with ingenuity, elegance and even humor.

Most of the works featured in the exhibition will be for sale, and a portion of the proceeds will be used to support the garden’s programs and events.
