Open Day Last Sunday
The bansuri, a side-blown bamboo flute has been a popular folk instrument in the Indian subcontinent since ancient times, and was introduced as a concert instrument into North Indian Classical Music in the 1930’s by the legendary Pt. Pannalal Ghosh. For the past 40 years David Philipson has been pursuing mastery on the bansuri and knowledge of Hindustani classical music. He began studying Indian Classical Music and bansuri in 1978 and earned a BFA and MFA at California Institute of the Arts (Calarts). In 1984 he was awarded a Fulbright grant to study bansuri in India with the leading exponents of the Pannalal Ghosh lineage and over the years has performed widely both as soloist and with many notable musicians. He will be accompanied by the acclaimed tabla player Javad Butah.
