Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden

Best-selling author Lisa See will be at the garden for an evening of wine, appetizers and a special presentation of her new novel, The Island of Sea Women.

The book, recently released, is set in South Korea and is a tale of friendship and family secrets among the female divers, or haenyeo, of the island Jejudo, off the southern coast of Korea. The story follows two best friends, Mi-ja and Young-sook, as they embark on their careers as divers and face complex and challenging social, political and personal circumstances as they mature.

The lives, friendships and challenges faced by women in little known areas of Asian cultures are familiar themes to readers of Lee's earlier best-selling books, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Shanghai Girls, China Dolls, Dreams of Joy, and most recently, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane. Booklist calls the work, "A stupendous multigenerational family saga, See's latest also provides an enthralling cultural anthropology highlighting the soon-to-be-lost, matriarchal haenyeo phenomenon and an engrossing history of violently tumultuous twentieth-century Korea."
